"The current election system has created a monster for democracy: we have an acting government that is only 20% backed in parliament. This is an effect of the fact that we have small parties in parliament, that manage to get though blackmail a lot more than what voters granted hem,” Basescu said.

He added liberals and the Hungarian minority party form a government that has a mere 20% support, going against democracy where the 50% plus one majority 1 "wins and rules".

Asked whether the Romanian democratic system is ready to adopt a system of large parties, that would result with the application of the uninominal vote, and eliminate small parties, Basescu said: "We have to be.”
