Romanian Judge Arrested For Corruption

The Court of Appeals of Craiova, southern Romania, decided Tuesday to place judge Bogdan Diaconescu, of the court of Dolj county, in preventive custody for 29 days, in a corruption case involving another judge of the same court, Laurentiu Anghel, and two lawyers, currently under preventive arrest.

According to judge Aurel Ilie, spokesman for the Court of Appeals, the ruling is not final and may be challenged before the Supreme Court.

Diaconescu, along with the other judge and the two lawyers arrested in the case on May 6, is accused of taking bribe in exchange for leniency in passing sentence on a convict serving time at the Craiova maximum security prison.
