Car Sales On Romanian Market Might Increase In Oct, Nov – Dealers

Sales on the Romanian car market will increase in October and November, the last two months of the 2010 clunkers program, supported mainly by the fall of car voucher prices and the shrinking of the used car market, car dealers said.

Volkswagen Dealer Association manager Silviu Preoteasa told MEDIAFAX there are many people who want to buy a new car but are waiting for the price of car vouchers sold on the market to decrease.

Radacini Motors sales manager Nicusor Sorescu said the increase of the car pollution tax in 2011 will make used car imports unprofitable. He highlighted that the 2010 clunkers program was more efficient than the 2009 edition of the program.

Association of Carmakers and Importers vice-president Brent Valmar said car sales through the clunkers program accounted for 40% of total car sales this year, adding he expects the program will meet the target set by authorities.

Data released by the Romanian Environment Ministry early this month said that over 164,000 cars older than ten years were scrapped by September 3, within the 2010 clunkers program, and the number of new cars bought within the program exceeded 38,000 units, of which 17,215 were made locally.

The 2010 clunkers program started on 18 February and will end on November 23, when vouchers to buy a new car will expire.

This year’s car park renewal program was allotted 722,000,000 lei (EUR1=RON4.2668), enough to scrap 190,000 old cars. The program sets that in exchange for a scrapped car, owners receive a voucher worth RON3,800 but no more than three vouchers can be used to buy a new car.
