Romanian Private Emergency Hospitals To Be Fined For Turning Down Poor Critical Patients

Private hospitals with emergency rooms in Romania will be fined 10,000 to 30,000 lei (EUR2,400 – EUR7,250) if they refuse to stabilize patients in critical condition who have no money to pay for the services, according to a bill drafted by the Health Ministry.

The ministry has put up for public debate a draft Government decision which sets drastic penalties for non-observance of hygiene norms and emergency room staff that fails to observe legislation, regardless of whether the respective hospital is public or private.

The biggest fines established by the bill are of RON10,000 to RON30,000 and will be applied to private hospitals with emergency units that refuse to stabilize patients in critical condition until they can be safely transferred to a public hospital.
