“It is my attribution as president to appoint a new candidate for the prime minister office,” Basescu said, adding he will sign a decree repealing the appointment of Stolojan and another decree appointing Emil Boc for the prime minster office.

Asked about Stolojan’s reasons for the withdrawal, Basescu said the only person who can explain that is Stolojan himself, adding he simply took note of the latter’s decision.

Under the law, Boc has 15 days to quit the position he holds as mayor of Cluj-Napoca, northwestern Romania.
