Romanian Tennis Player Victor Hanescu Fined $15,000 After Wimbledon Spitting Incident

Romanian tennis player Victor Hanescu was fined $15,000 on Saturday for “unsportsmanlike conduct” and “not using best efforts,” after he spat at the crowd Friday at a match against Germany’s Daniel Brands, in the third round of the Wimbledon tournament, organizers said.

Hanescu was fined $7,500 for „unsportsmanlike conduct” and another $7,500 for not using best efforts at the conclusion of the match. According to the rules, Hanescu will receive the prize earned up to the third round minus the $15,000 fine. Hanescu won GBP31,350 before acceding to the third round.

The Romanian player has the right to appeal the decision within 10 days.

Brands was the winner of the match, 6-7, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 3-0, after Hanescu withdrew, citing a leg injury.

TV footage appeared to show Hanescu spitting towards the crowd after allegedly being verbally abused. Hanescu then appeared to deliberately serve double faults, before withdrawing from the match.
