Asked what his priorities would be should he run for a new mandate as head of state, Basescu replied „the greatest priority is the state’s reform, since the state can no longer be a burden for its citizens. At the moment we bring money from taxes and we use it to insure the state’s functioning – 1.45 million public sector employees, clearly solutions are needed here,” he said.
Another priority mentioned by Basescu is the revision of the Constitution.
„The second one, the Constitution. I have tried, it is clear we need a revision of the Constitution. My option (…) would be a single chamber Parliament, because there will be a second Chamber in Brussels. The Parliament in Brussels will decide many things for us as well so then what point is there for two chambers when the national Parliament needs to cooperate with the one in Brussels,” he said.
According to Basescu, another priority would be the initiation of a policy to promote Romania within the EU.
„Not with videos saying «Romanians are hot stuff » (…) Europeans know very little about us and have come to characterize us depending on the incidents occurring in Spain, Italy, Great Britain or France. We need to make them see out culture, history, traditions, kindness,” Basescu said.
