Basescu said he called parliament parties for a meeting at GMT 1000, to tell them the name of his prime minister nominee. He said he designated someone who is capable of understanding the resources of the current economic crisis and who has the authority to manage a government and state institutions in this context.

"We need a capable prime minister," Basescu said, and nominated Stolojan.

Under the Constitution, the candidate for the prime minister office has ten days to request a confidence vote from Parliament for a governing program and the list of cabinet members.

Stolojan said his main objective is to form a government in the following ten days, to have the new cabinet invested by Dec 22.
