Hasotti said liberals tagged Cioroianu’s statements inappropriate, but said they all understood the minister’s outburst was emotional.

“No decision was made regarding Cioroianu. We had a very brief discussion about this. Mister Cioroianu informed us of his statements. We all agreed it was emotional and inappropriate reaction, but he apologized immediately and we consider the matter closed,” Hasotti said.

The liberal official added the minister is still backed by the party and the government, saying decisions on any other issues expect European Parliament elections would be made after November 25.

Cioroianu has been urged to resign in the light of his recent comments, according to which Romanian criminals should be taken to the Egyptian desert. The foreign minister made the statements as a first reaction of the diplomatic scandal between Romania and Italy, sparked by the murder of an Italian woman in Rome, allegedly by a Romanian national of Rroma ethnicity.
