Former Romanian Football League Chairman Wins Appeal Against Seven-Year Prison Sentence

The court’s decided to acquit Dragomir of all charges in the case, with the decision being definitive, following several postponements of the verdict.

The former football chief was initially sentenced to prison in June 2016, in a case were prosecutors accused him of participating in a tax evasion, embezzlement and money laundering ring with 40 other people, damaging the state budget with approximately EUR5.4 million.

He was also accused of irregularities in the selling of TV rights for football matches in Romania’s top flight. Prosecutors stated that Dragomir contracted an intermediary to sell TV rights packages for a number of Liga I matches in 2011, despite having already agreed to sell them to cable provider RCS-RDS, resulting in the intermediary receiving EUR2.8 million for services which were ultimately not provided.
