Oprea, a four-star general in reserve, is leader of the independent group of lawmakers in Parliament. A former social democrat, he was interior minister for less than a month in the cabinet of democrat liberals and social democrats, but his party pulled his political support after he appointed the head of the Interior Ministry’s intelligence service without consulting party leaders first.
