The Romanian government recently approved an emergency ordinance under which companies are to pay a minimum yearly tax of RON2,200 (some EUR500), computed based on total revenues. The tax could go up to RON43,000 for companies with total revenues above RON129 million.
The companies that register profit will continue to pay a 16% tax, but not less than the minimum limit for their corresponding category of revenues.

According to a study conducted by the finance ministry, 102,000 companies that reported an average turnover of EUR200 a month in 2008 might stop their activity after the introduction of the minimum tax, while total revenues until 2012 are estimated at RON4.2 billion.
