The new chip-based technology targets Maestro and Cirrus BRD cards.
All MasterCard-branded cards will be equipped with chips in the upcoming period, while the bank’s entire card portfolio will use the new techology by yearend, a press release of BRD read.
Chip cards are hybrid cards with both magnetic strip and chip, which make card cloning near impossible.
Thus, offline transactions become as secure as any authorized online transactions and the new technology also allows faster processing speed of transactions.
Magnetic strip cards in stock will be used throughout their validity period and will be automatically replaced with the new chip cards when they are renewed.
BRD issued over 2.2 million cards and operates a network of 1,370 ATMs and over 15,000 POS.
BRD has assets worth nearly EUR12 billion, the number of clients reaches over 2.5 million, while its network includes over 800 units.
