The country’s new government, formed of centrist Democrat Liberals and left-wing Social Democratic Party, plans to stimulate ecologic agricultural production, as well as fairly untapped domains such as tree growing, vegetable and grapevine sectors.
In addition, the new government program stipulates further agricultural projects such as “The Farmer”, which will ensure absorption of European funds in the field.
Romanian farmers are also to benefit from a series of government subsidies, as well as from lower excises for oil used in agriculture, at the EU’s minimum threshold of EUR21 per ton.
The government also pledged to rehabilitate irrigation systems for 1.5 million hectares of land, as well as increasing forestry land to 30% of Romania’s surface (of 238,391 square kilometers).
Romania’s new rulers also plan to keep food prices at a “reasonable” level, a task that include enforcing a Code of good practices regarding food trade signed between farmers and big retail chains.
