Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled Thursday, with a majority of votes, that the provisions of government emergency decree 230/2008, banning cumulated pensions and wages in the public sector, are unconstitutional.
The decree banned pensioners working in the public sector from receiving both pensions and wages, in a move to cut back on public spending and wipe out abuse of taxpayer money.
The decree triggered protests among doctors, teachers and actors and Romania’s ombudsman challenged it at the Constitutional Court, saying it is retroactive and breaches people’s constitutional rights to work and get pensions.
