Romanian Govt Proposes Raising Low Public Salaries To RON850 – Unions

Romanian Government officials propose increasing small public sector salaries up to 850 lei (EUR1=RON4.2682), but make the 25% slash introduced in June permanent through a new public wage law, "Sanitas" union federation vice-president Adrian Barea said Friday, after talks at the Ministry of Labor.

According to Barea, salaries lower than RON600 could be raised to RON810, RON840 or RON850. At the same time, however, the Government would keep the 25% slash through 2011, through a new wage law.

The unions say it is unacceptable for the new law to build on the reduced salary level, arguing that the Constitutional Court said this measure would only be in effect for six months.
