They said lobbying for Ciolos at the European Commission has been going on for the past two years and his potential nomination doesn’t depend so much on intentions in Romania, but on the Commission.

The sources added the dispute between Romania’s two ruling parties (the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Liberal Party) over the nomination for European Commissioner occurred when the positions of Germany and Poland for EU Commissioners were still unknown.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy confirmed Thursday, after a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, that France’s acting minister of agriculture, Michel Barnier, is favorite for a position of EU Commissioner. Barnier would be commissioner for the internal market.

Romanian agriculture minister Ilie Sarbu said last week he hopes Dacian Ciolos is appointed EU Commissioner for Agriculture.
