The higher electricity prices are triggered by higher fuel costs and investments to meet environmental requirements, as well as expenses related to CO2 emission reduction.

The European Union, which Romania joined in 2007, imposed member states to gradually reduce their carbon dioxide, or CO2, emissions by 20% until 2020.

ANRE said the prices also reflect electric power supply costs given the splitting of businesses that sell electricity from the ones that run the transmission networks of wires, under the European Union ownership unbundling law.

Sources close to Romanian energy watchdog ANRE said Wednesday that electricity household prices will face a one-digit increase as of July 1.

The latest electricity price hike, of 4%, was operated on April 1, 2007.

Electricity prices for captive users, including the population and small industrial users, are usually evaluated twice a year.

Nevertheless, ANRE can make such evaluations several times a year if power producers ask for a price increase or in case of unpredictable situations, like drought or the reducing of quantities.
