Romania To Close 1,000 Km Of Railroad, Lease Out 4,000 Km

„There are 1,000 kilometers of railway that is no longer used and we have no money for maintenance. We’ll have 5,000 kilometers of rail, of which 1,000 will be closed and the rest will be auctioned off for private transport operators to use and maintain. The country’s railway network totals 20,000 kilometers,” Boagiu said at a seminar organized by business newspaper Ziarul Financiar.

The minister said state-owned railway companies have amassed debts of 1% of the gross domestic product over the past ten years and the decision to close and lease railroad infrastructure will lower maintenance spending.
