However, if Basescu attempts a remake of the alliance of democrats and liberals, social democrats will be fiercely opposed, Iliescu said.
Iliescu added Basescu will do his best to avoid the Social Democratic Party.
Social democrats secured the most votes in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, of roughly 36%, followed by democrat liberals with roughly 30% and liberals with roughly 20%.
The leader of the Romanian social democrats, Mircea Geoana, invited, Sunday evening, the other parties and Romanian President Traian Basescu to an “open dialogue” regarding the creation of the next Government, adding that the future of Romania depends on this dialogue.
He also said that through the vote cast Sunday, "Romania clearly said the social democrats should lead the new Government."
Geoana said the social democrats obtained an “undisputed” victory in the elections, adding the party will hold over 40% of mandates in the future Parliament.
Democrat liberal vice-president Theodor Stolojan said the party will start negotiations to forma government as soon as official election results are out. He added the democrat liberals’ first option for negotiations is with liberals and declined to say whether the party is willing to negotiate with social democrats.
