Romanian Authorities Suspended 3,869 Fraudulent Invalidity Pension Files

More than 470,000 files for invalidity pensions have been investigated by Romanian authorities since the start of 2010 and 3,869 people have been taken off pension after being re-evaluated, with the National Pension and Social Insurance House (CNPAS) stating it would save EUR5 million every year.

Out of a total 915,656 people registered nationally as receiving invalidity pensions, 478,475 have been re-evaluated since the start of the year and the pensions of 3,869 have been terminated. According to CNPAS data, the condition of 15,863 people was found to have improved and they were assigned to a new category of invalidity.

Prime Minister Emil Boc said on August 4 that the government has managed to save EUR26 million per year by cutting social aid granted illegally, following partial investigations of files for minimum income, disability benefits and invalidity pensions.
