Speaking in a news conference in Bucharest, IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn expressed his confidence that Romania will have met its quarterly targets at the fund’s next review mission in April.

He said Romania’s current fiscal situation is difficult, but it is bound to improve. On the other hand, the country has a good monetary policy.

Romania could register a reasonable economic growth in 2010, but this doesn’t mean the crisis is over, Strauss-Kahn also said.

Until the jobless rate starts to fall, the crisis is not over, he added.

Strauss-Kahn was in a one-day visit to Romania, part of his tour to Europe. The IMF chief’s schedule included meetings with Romanian President Traian Basescu, Prime Minister Emil Boc, central bank governor and the heads of the country’s two chambers of parliament.

Romania and the IMF signed a EUR12.95 billion two-year standby agreement, as part of a wider EUR19.95 billion aid package that includes funds from the EU, the World Bank and other lenders.
