Romania’s New Govt Plans To Build 1,000 Km Of Highway

Romania’s new center-left government committed to build nearly 1,000 kilometers of highway by 2012 and start works on another 720 kilometers of highway.

The new government also plans to upgrade 5,000 kilometers of national roads.

According to the working draft of the governing program, the new government plans to create a National Pact for Romanian Highways to ensure coherence and continuity in the funding of infrastructure and highway construction.

The upgrade of national roads targets ring roads for about 50 towns and the rehabilitation of 10,000 kilometers of county roads in collaboration with local authorities.

The government plans to complete works on the railway linking capital Bucharest to southeastern Constanta by 2009 and on the rail liking southern Campina to central Brasov by 2011.

The tax perceived for the use of rail infrastructure will be charged per train car instead of per train, and the tax will be differentiated depending on the type of railway and the type of train.

Train stations in Bucharest Cluj, Sibiu, Alba Iulia, Timisoara, Iasi, Craiova, Constanta and Galati will see upgrade works.

The government plans to create the National Airport Company Bucharest, to manage Otopeni and Baneasa airports, and the National Airport Company Banat to manage airports in Timisoara and Arad, western Romania. The government plans the completion of a new passenger terminal at Otopeni airport to reach a capacity of five million passengers a year, provide financial and technical assistance to airports in touristic areas (Suceava, Tulcea, Satu-Mare, Baia-Mare, Iasi) and technical assistance to local authorities in Brasov, Alba, Galati, Braila and Bistrita in view of building new airports.

In the naval transport sector, the working government program sets the construction of a bridge crossing the Danube-Black Sea Canal to link the Bucharest-Constanta highway to the Constanta ring road.
