The data is included in a survey complied with the support of the Health Ministry in September and October 2007. The survey polled all managers of Romanian healthcare units.
Only 18.5% of managers said that although the migration phenomenon is present, their units are not confronted with a shortage of trained staff.
Nearly half the country, 43%, is confronted with a high and very high shortage of staff, and many units are thus incapable of functioning properly.
More than half the managers in the healthcare system said the level of training of medical staff has lowered considerably following migration.
Statistics show that January through September 2007, over 2,000 healthcare system employees left for jobs abroad, mostly in Italy.
The survey concludes that measures that would help stabilize the situation would be higher salaries in Romania and significant improvements in working conditions.
