“There will be two Police departments, one local and one national. The current Community Police will be integrated into the Local Police department,” Romanian Interior Minister Dan Nica said Sunday, at the end of the Government meeting which approved the draft law on the creation of the local Police.

The new structure will support public individual registry services in field work and may include, through delegation, officers from the Romanian Police force’s territorial branches.

The local Police will be staffed by public servants and contracted personnel. Its duties in the field of public traffic and order will be carried out exclusively by public workers.

When asked whether, as of 2010, public order services will be under the management of the mayor and the local Police will direct traffic in Bucharest, Minister Nica answered these aspects will be handled by the mayor.

“Components related to order and safety will be handled by the national Police force,” Nica added.

The local Police will also have duties regarding the traffic of heavy vehicles and the national Police will be concerned with road traffic, but mainly that on national roads, highways and accident inquiry.
