Romanian Healthcare Reform Ready Once Hospitals Can Finance Themselves-Min

The reform of healthcare system in Romania will be complete once hospitals are able to finance themselves, without asking funds from the state budget or from local authorities, Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu said Thursday.

He said hospitals need professional managers to set up development funds so that hospitals will be able to decide on proper lines of investments.

“Once these things are enacted, then, in my opinion, the reform will be completed,” Nicolaescu said.

Only then the hospitals will be able to circulate their funds and make any investments they need without holding out their hands to the state or local budgets, Nicolaescu mentioned.

There are 434 hospitals in Romania, many of them very old, which require investments estimated at EUR17 billion, Nicolaescu pointed out.

“I don’t believe the state has EUR17 billion to investment in hospitals in the next five years, when the legal term for hospitals’ accreditation expires,” he said.
