Nine In Ten Romanians Say Country’s Economic Situation Is Gloomy; 85% Distrust Govt – Poll

Nine in ten Romanians say the country’s economic situation is gloomy and 85% of them, the highest percentage in the European Union, distrust the Government, according to a Eurobarometer survey.

According to the survey, 42% of Romanians think the Government has at its disposal the necessary means to counter the effects of the economic crisis. Only 7% of Romanians say the country’s economic situation is good, while 2% of them don’t know what to say on the issue. Most Romanians, or 85%, said they distrust the Government, only 12% of them expressed confidence in the Executive, while 3% declined to say their opinion on the issue.

A quarter of Romanians polled in the survey said the European Union is the organization most capable to counter the effects of the economic and financial crisis, 5% of them mentioned the United States, 9% of them said the G20 organization should be assigned this task and 6% of them mentioned the International Monetary Fund. One in 100 Romanians thinks the country’s gloomy situation should be tackled by other organizations, 3% think no institution is able to cope with this situation and 10% didn’t know what to say.

More than half of Romanians, or 53%, think the country’s economic situation is very bad, compared with the 28% average in the EU, and 38% say the situation is bad. Also, 1% of them say the economic situation is very good and 6% think the situation is good, below the 21% average in the EU.

Over 60% of Romanians polled in the survey see the country’s economic situation worsening over the next 12 months, 23% expect things to stagnate, and 11% see a positive evolution. As regards the unemployment countrywide, 94% of Romanians think the situation is bad, over the 83% average in the EU. The survey also shows that 56% of Romanians trust the European Union, while 34% of them display a negative perception.

Nearly two thirds of Romanians agree with implementing now the reforms that will make things better for the next generations, despite the sacrifices entailed in the process, 23% disagree and 15% don’t know what to say on the issue. Also, 70% of Romanians say the country needs new reforms, only 14% say current reforms are good, while the remaining 16% say they don’t know whether new reforms are needed.

More than half of Romanians, or 56%, say the country’s budget deficit and debts must be reduced without delay, 19% disagree and a quarter of them don’t know what to say on the issue.

Seven in ten Romanians think that a stronger cooperation between EU member states would help cushion the effects of the crisis, 12% disagree, while the remaining 18% don’t know what to say on the issue.

The survey, which is conducted twice a year, polled 1,020 Romanian citizens in the May 7 – May 19 interval.
