Romanian cable TV providers will no longer be obliged to carry private TV stations, according to a bill amending the Law on audiovisual broadcasting, put forward by a number of democrat liberal MPs.

Romanian cable operators need to pay, starting with April, 6% of their gross monthly income, VAT excluded, for copyright, which could lead to an increase in the prices for cable subscriptions by some 4%, Radu Petric, president of the Cable Communications Association, told MEDIAFAX.

The Romanian Cable Communications Association warned that an increase from 2% to 12% of the remuneration for copyright and other rights, demanded from cable communications operators by authorities, does not comply with European practices and will bring a 10% increase in subscription fees.
