The deputy chairman of Romania’s Liberal Party, Florin Roman, stated on Friday that 188 felons who had their sentences reduced as compensation for poor prison conditions committed violent crimes after their release, quoting data from an official response of the Justice Ministry.

One Romanian woman sued, in the Cluj Court of Appeal, several politicians, whom she accuses of all the crimes in the Criminal Code, while witnesses include French president Nicolas Sarkozy and former American president George Bush.

Romania’s General Prosecutors’ Office closed the file on the crimes and abuse committed by Romania’s communist, in which 67 former activists, psychiatrists and police employees had been indicted. Prosecutors said the file had passed its statute of limitations.

The Romanian High Council of the Magistrates (CSM) approved the proposition formulated by justice minister Catalin Predoiu regarding the introduction in the Criminal Code of crimes involving pressure on justice and contempt of legal bodies, which are now punishable by prison terms or fines.
