Cigarette prices in Romania will rise by an average 1 leu (EUR1=RON4.3523) per pack as of Thursday, July 1, following the country’s decision to hike its sales tax and up guarantees for fiscal storage, JTI Romania corporate affairs manager Gilda Lazar told MEDIAFAX Wednesday.

Romania’s Finance Ministry and Labor Ministry will draw up a set of measures to help pensioners and people with low incomes pay their gas bills, Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said Wednesday.

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Tuesday urged the government and the parties not to respond with populist measures to the recent price increases of food products and energy, the presidency said in a statement.
