„Public sector employees would recover 15 percentage points, after they recovered another 15 in October last year, so the 25% wage cut operated in 2010 could be covered in 2012,” Sarbu explained.

Asked where the Government would find the money needed to raise wages, Sarbu said the main financial resource will be economic growth expected in 2011 and 2012.

„For 2012, we expect economic growth of 3.5% to 4%,” he said, adding the plan would be halted in the event of a new economic downturn.

The Government has committed o the International Monetary Fund to raise public wages next year only coupled with a further downsizing of the sector, through voluntary layoffs, Prime Minister Emil Boc said on national television. He added wages in the public sector are capped at 7.2% of the gross domestic product.
