He added the proposal for European Commission is forwarded by the prime minister and supported in the European council by the head of state.

"The proposition is made by the Government. No one else may nominate the European Commissioner. The decision to appoint Commissioners is made in the European Council, where it will be my mission to support he Government’s nomination, as head of the Romanian Delegation to the European Council,” Basescu said.

The head of state added the country’s future EU Commissioner will be selected based on competence, not political color.

The president also called on political parties to abstain from debates on this issue, saying such talks could jeopardize Romania’s efforts to obtain an important portfolio, to match its position as the seventh largest country in the European Union.
