Romania To Keep Public Sector Hiring Frozen, Halt Bonuses, Overtime Until 2014

Romanian public sector employees will receive no vacation, gift or meal vouchers until 2014, no bonuses until 2013 and will be rewarded for overtime with free hours only, according to the Government's fiscal-budgetary strategy for 2012-2014.

Only one in seven vacant positions will be filled in the public sector until 2013 and public institutions will be forbidden from buying cars, furniture and office equipment until 2014.

The reference value corresponding to coefficient 1 in the public sector wage grid will be frozen at 600 lei (EUR140) next year, says the strategy.

The Government expects the hiring freeze to result in savings of RON1.72 billion in 2012 and RON1.99 billion in 2013. Halting the issue of meal, gift and vacation vouchers should save the budget RON9.1 billion in 2012 and RON9.6 billion in 2013.
