EU Gen Affairs Council Votes To Spare Romania Of Safeguard Clause

The European Union’s general affairs council CAGRE adopted Monday the European Commission’s recommendation to spare Romania of a safeguard clause under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu told MEDIAFAX.

„The Council validated the Commission’s recommendation not to apply the safeguard clause. They also voted to remove any possibility of conditioning funding or Schengen area accession to the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism,” Diaconescu said.

The minster added, however, that Romania needs to take reform very seriously and continue the process, otherwise other EU states might again push to condition the country’s allotted funds to reform.
