Romania could meet most of its objectives under the EU’s Cooperation and Verification Mechanism this year if the Justice Ministry and High Council of Magistrates get along and act together, Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu said Tuesday.

The European Union’s general affairs council CAGRE adopted Monday the European Commission’s recommendation to spare Romania of a safeguard clause under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu told MEDIAFAX.

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Romania has made progress in the justice sector and the fact that the EC didn’t trigger the safeguard clause or apply restrictive financial measures is important, but it is not enough.
