„We are taking every necessary step and hope to get the European Union’s permission this year,” said Tabara in the conference Mediafax Talks about GMOs. He added that soybeans would strengthen Romania’s export capacity.
According to the minister, Romania consumes 500,000 tons of soybeans each year, and its production potential is 2 million tons. The difference could be exported to every country except the United States and Brazil, which have a reputation as major soy producers.
On Wednesday, Tabara said Romania is missing out on almost EUR1 billion every year because it does not farm genetically modified soy.
According to European Union legislation, authorization for the farming or import of genetically modified plants is subject to a vote involving every member state.
