Romanian Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara said Thursday that Romania has applied to the European Union for permission to grow and export genetically modified soybeans, starting with 2012.

Romania will have to return EUR41.7 million to the European Commission for failure to use the money correctly under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Subsidies per hectare for Romanian farmers will increase to EUR142 from the current EUR107, as the European Commission has promised to raise the subsidy by EUR35, Romanian agriculture minister said Saturday.
